Two of Everything
Two of Everything. Written and illustrated by Lily Toy Hong. (1993). Albert Whitman and Company. (0807581577). Gr. Pre-K-4.
A Chinese folktale that blends both humor and wisdom. It follows a poor farmer couple as they discover a magic pot, which doubles everything that is put in it. Once this discovery is made the couple works quickly to double the one thing they really need, their coins. However, mayhem ensues when the farmer's wife falls into the pot and then the farmer. It is a easily followed tale with math and morals.
A great activity to do with this book is to give the children coins and their own little pots or cups. Then have the children put some coins in the pot and determine how many coins would come out if they doubled. You can differentiate based on the number of coins each group uses.

Count On Pablo
Count on Pablo by Barbara de Rubertis. Illustrated by Rebecca Thornburgh. (1999). Kane Press. (1575650908). Gr. 2-4.
Follow Pablo as he skip counts his way through his grandmother's vegetable garden to help her pack her wares for the farmer's market. Pablo uses his math skills to skip count by 2's, 5's and 10's so the limes, peppers, tomatoes, onions and cilantro get to market bunched and ready for sale. A creative story where Pablo has to find a way to make the vegetables more attractive for sale: He creates his own salsa!
This story comes with a 100's counting chart that can be enlarged and used along with the story by coloring in the squares of skip counting as Pablo discusses them. The 2's can be counted in yellow for the onions, the 5's in green for the peppers, the 10's in red for the tomatoes. The similarities in the numbers can then be discussed, such as: All of the 2's are evens; all of the five's are in the five and 10's columns of the chart and they are even and odd numbers; and the 10's are the same as the 5's but in just one column. You can also make Pablo's salsa and figure out how much of each ingredient would be needed to double, triple or half the recipe.

Even Steven and Odd Todd
Even Steven and Odd Todd by Kathryn Cristaldi. Illustrated by Henry B. Morehouse. (1996). Cartwheel Press. (0590227157). Gr. K-3.
This is a story of two cousins, Even Steven and Odd Todd who are both obsessed with even and odd numbers. Everything they do must be in even or odd numbers only for each of them. This becomes a bit of a problem when Odd Todd comes to live with Even Steven. How many pancakes do they make in the morning? How many rows of plants do they garden? What time do they get up 8am or 9am? But in the end they find a way to make their different ways of doing things work to win them a prize!
There are many activities to do with this book. First, you can discuss with your students what the terms even and odd mean and how to count up and down by evens and odds. It is also a great book to ask students if the numbers Steven and Todd are using are even or odd. It is also a great book to use to discuss what animals have even or odd legs, what wheeled vehicles have an even or odd number of wheels and what other things they can think of that come in even or odd numbers.
