Math Station # 12
Number Sense Teacher Station
SKIP COUNTING TEACHER ACTIVITY
While the students are working at the skip counting workstations, the teacher can be working with her own small group on a different skip counting activity. I like to use the teacher station as a differentiated station. For this station, I will be taking small objects, such as small dinosaurs, army men, tops, pictures of body parts to work with the students on skip counting. For 2's, the small toys allow for the students to count on by 2's and for the more advanced students to count backwards by 2's. For counting by five's I like to use pictures of hands with the students again counting backwards and forwards by 5's. Finally, I can use picture of ten toes to have the kids count by 10's. For the 5's and 10's, I also use the students themselves to count. I will say to John, "Now if you have Amy, Sam and Dillon's feet, how many toes do we have?" "Now, if we add to that all their fingers as well how many fingers and toes do we have all together?
EVEN AND ODD ACTIVITY
I would work with the students on the idea of "partners" for even numbers and odd numbers lacking a partner. Use examples of activities that need two people, dancing, singles tennis, war card game, see-sawing, thumb wrestling and checkers/chess. Draw partners for each on paper and have students decide if numbers are even or odd. For students who need more help, limit the numbers to those under 20. For those who need more challenge, have them add or subtract numbers and say if those are even or odd.
