SKIP COUNTING SONG
Skill Content/Objective: To have children count by 2's, 5's and 10's with ease using rhythmic song.
Materials: Cards with song written it for children to review.
Number cards with number by 2's, 5's and 10's on them for students who need extra help.
Paper to note answers to Math Talk cards and where student dropped out of game.
Description: Students use a skip counting song to learn to count by 2's, 5's and 10's.
Directions:
- The players sit in a circle on the floor.
- To begin, they recite the jingle together while slapping, clapping, and snapping as shown:
- (slap knees) (clap hands) (snap left hand) (snap right hand)
Counting, counting, 1, 2, 3.
That's too easy, can't you see?
Count in- stead by twos or threes, or
By the number named by me. . - All the players continue to slap, clap, and snap as the first player declares a number to count by (for example, ten).
- The player to his left then must say the next number in the series (in this case, twenty).
- Play continues around the circle.
- Each player must say the next number in the series during one slap-clap-snap-snap pattern.
- If a player is stumped or says the wrong number, he must drop out.
- To resume the game, the remaining players recite the jingle again and declare a new number.
- The last player remaining after all the others have dropped out is the winner
Differentiation:
- For students who need more help, have laminated pages with counting by 2's, 5's and 10's for them to look at while they do the song.
- For students who need more of a challenge, have them play the game counting by 2's, 5's and 10's backwards.
Assessment:
Formative
-Listen as students perform song for rhythmic cadencing of familiarity.
Summative
-Have students write on paper what they were counting by when they dropped out and what was the number that was said before it was their turn.
