MATH STATION # 3
PASS THE PAPER
Skill Content/Objective: Students will practice skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's while cooperating in a group activity.
Materials: Rubber Ball
1 Pencil Per Student
1 Sheet of Paper Per Group-multiple sheets available for students to do extra "I Can" activities
"I Can" cards with skip counting sequences
Description:
Part I-Each student take the ball and bounces the ball while they skip count by 2's to 20 to warm up.
Part II-Each student takes out their pencil and paper. Explain: “We are going to have a race. Each student has one piece of paper. When I say “go” the first student will pick an "I Can" card with a skip counting sequence on it. The first student will write the first number in the sequence, pass the paper clockwise for the next student to write the next number in the sequence and so on until you finish the sequence. This should then be repeated with other "I Can" cards if time is left. Your middle group would use the green "I Can" cards.
Differentiation:
There are several ways that you can play “Pass the Paper.”
Variation 1: For students who need more support, they can count only to 20 for the 2's, 50 for the 5's and 50 for the 10's. These students should also use plastic counters to count out their numbers. These students would use the Blue "I Can" cards.
Variation 2: For students who need more of a challenge, they can play "Pass the Paper" starting at 100 and counting down by 2's, 5's and 10's. These students would use the Purple "I Can" cards.
Variation 3: For student who need more of a challenge, they can play using addition/subtraction problems. They would use the Orange "I Can" cards. For example, you could have each student write down one addition/subtraction problem that equals 10 before they pass the paper.
Assessment:
Summative: Review "Pass the Paper" sheets for students to see which activities they picked and what they were able to complete.
