MATH STATION # 9
COLLECTING BACKWARDS FROM 100
Skill Content/Objective: Students will count backwards from 100 by 10's
Students will put items in groups of 10's by 1's, 2's and 5's
Materials: 1 collection of items(buttons, pens, paper hands, beads) totaling 100 per partner group
1 number line per partner group
1 recording sheet per partner group
10 cups per partner group
Description: Students will form partner groups. Each group will take a number line, a recording sheet, 10 cups and 1 set of items which total 100. Students will then take the 100 items and break it down into groups of 10 items which are to be put in the cups. Students will then fill out the recording sheet which asks them which collection they picked, how they counted out the groups of 10 and why they did so in that way. Finally, students will be asked to use their cupped groupings to count backwards from 100 and put those numbers on a number line. (I have included blank number lines below under recording forms.)
Assessment:
Formative: -Walk to partner groups during exercise and discuss with them why each group sorted for 10's in a different way. Ask them how they got the numbers they put on their number lines.
Summative: -Review recording sheet information.
-At whole Group lesson, discuss with the students the different ways people grouped their items and why there is more than one correct way, i.e. by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's.
-At whole group time, have a set of 10 cups of items at the front and the number line on the board and have students come up to write in the numbers counting backwards from 100.
